Chess Classes for Kids and Adults
Chess Max Academy is a specialized Chess School that was developed to teach chess to those who want to learn quickly and correctly.
Our goal is to teach chess in-person and online to both kids and adults the most effective way possible. To this end, the Academy’s founder, Grandmaster Max Dlugy has created the curriculum of the Academy, all presentation tools, and the software that is actively used in the chess lessons.
We at the Chess Academy offer chess classes for kids and adults in the New York and Greenwich, CT areas, and online group classes via Zoom. Additionally, we have individual private classes as well as online chess tutoring for both kids and adults. Chess Lessons for kids are both group chess classes and individual private classes. The group classes begin with the Tots classes which are generally for 4.5 year olds – 5 years old kids, although many Tots start as young as 3.5 years old and quickly make progress in learning all the rules.
The chess classes for kids and beginners are split into three different levels: Tots – where 3.5-5.5 year old kids learn chess and their basic rules, Juniors level – where 5.5-7 year old kids start practicing attacking, capturing, and checkmating their opponents, and the Jumpstarters level class, for 6-9 years old, where kids begin to get acquainted with the tactical tools and the clock, which will help them start competing in tournaments.
Our Intermediate levels begin with the Challengers group classes, suited for kids who have competed in tournaments and achieved a minimum US Chess Federation rating of 500, and the Stars Level class, appropriate for 1000-1400 USCF rated kids.
Our Advanced levels are Champions (for players rated 1400-1700) and Masters (for 1700 and above) are for kids in the top 50 of their age group in the country, working to become National Champions in the next few years, as well as for adults in that rating range looking to significantly improve their game.
Chess classes for adults are currently offered only as part of our general program, where we accept adults into classes starting with the Stars level program. Adults are welcome to join those classes, but generally tend to study individually by taking online or in-person private lessons.
Why should you choose Chess Max Academy?
1. The Program was created by a former World Junior champion.
Grandmaster Max Dlugy was the best player in the world for his age from 15-19 years old, whereupon he won the World Under 21 Chess Championship. He understands how to teach kids more effectively than most grandmasters in the world today. He has also coached World Champions Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov. Max Dlugy devotes his time to teaching his master level coaches to become better at what they do and to improving the Academy’s curriculum, so the instruction level at the Academy is always at the best possible level.
2. Chess Classes for kids organized by level.
It is extremely important when teaching kids to have a level playing field, where kids can compete in both solving puzzles and playing with kids of similar level. In this way they hone their skills and are not overpowered or bored by the difference in skills.
This is the best environment for the kids to thrive and improve their knowledge.
3. Fast progress.
All the students are constantly monitored by their coaches by recording their progress on the checklist of skills they need to acquire to move to the next level. When that checklist is completed, the student informs GM Dlugy, who checks the progress of the student and immediately suggests to the parents to move them up to the next level, even if this occurs in the middle of the semester. In this way, all kids can move up as quickly as their interest allows, not wasting any time in relearning things they already know. To make sure the material is learned well, homework is assigned for every class.
4. Special Tools.
We have invested into creating our own mobile app – “Chess Max Academy “downloadable both on PlayMarket and AppStore and the most advanced online school platform on our website, allowing students to learn in the most efficient way. GM Max Dlugy created a database of issues filtered by theme and difficulty, allowing the coaches to assign those puzzles to students in a way that would challenge them while also making sure they can review what was learned in class.
5. Practical Play
No amount of studying will replace practice and to address that issue, our classes have a 2-`1 ratio between learning new topics and review of homework and practical play. In our hourly classes for beginners, 40 minutes of each class is devoted to homework review and study of new material and 20 minutes is set aside for practicing actual game playing under the supervision of the coaches. In the advanced classes, the 90 minutes is split into two sections: 60 minutes for new material and 30 minutes for practical play.
Aside from practice during group classes, the Academy also functions as a local chess club, offering tournament play every other Sunday and club play on Friday evenings.
